No permission for BNP rally at Suhrawardy

Staff Reporter

The BNP has been denied permission to hold its planned rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on March 12 demanding the release of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia, according to party sources.

The party was also not given green signal to hold rallies at Hadith Park in Khulna on March 10 and Laldighi Ground in Chittagong on March 30, the sources added.

The BNP had recently been denied permission twice for its rallies on Shurawardy Udyan—first on November 8 last year to mark what it says the National Revolution and Solidarity Day and the second on February 22 demanding the release of Khaleda Zia from jail.

The BNP leaders said they do not know whether they would be given permission for their programme as the ruling party has several rallies at the venue.

Speaking at a youth assembly at the National Press Club in the capital yesterday, BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said they did not get permission to hold the party’s rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.

He alleged that the ruling Awami League is holding rallies at Suhrawardy Udyan and that the authorities are repeatedly denying permission to BNP to hold its programmes there.

“Holding rallies is our constitutional rights. It’s our democratic, political and citizen rights but the government is depriving the BNP from it,” he said.

The BNP leader assured the authorities of holding peaceful  programme at Suhrawardy Udyan and requested them to allow the BNP to hold the rally there.

BNP Assistant Office Secretary Taiful Islam Tipu also confirmed that they were yet to get permission to hold the March 12 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.

Meanwhile, as part of its countrywide programme, the BNP will stage a sit-in in front of the National Press Club from 11am to 12pm demanding the release of party Chairperson Khaleda.

The party has also planned to hold rallies in city and district levels in phases to press home their demand for the release of Khaleda Zia on bail.
