UN body to review social, economic, cultural rights

DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT

The United Nations committee on economic, social and cultural rights will review Bangladesh on March 15-16, according to the Office of the High commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The review meeting on Bangladesh along with some other countries will take place in Geneva, said a press release forwarded by the OHCHR yesterday.

Bangladesh is among the 166 nations that has ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), and so are reviewed by the committee on how they are implementing the covenant.

The committee, which is composed of 18 independent human rights experts, will meet delegations from respective States to examine a range of issues relating to the covenant.
