Attack on Zafar Iqbal

Protest continues at DU

Teachers and students of Dhaka University along with writers and cultural personalities yesterday protested the attack on eminent science fiction writer and educationist Professor Dr Mohammed Zafar Iqbal. They also demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators who are involved in brutal attack on prof Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of  Science and Technology. They also urged the government and law enforcers to arrest the masterminds behind the attack and to uproot militancy from the society.  

They came up with the demands at separate human chain programmes arranged by Ganajagaran Mancha and Sammilita Sankritik Jote formed at the altar of Aparajeya Bangla on the DU campus and Central Shaheed Minar premises. Prof Robayet Ferdous of Mass Communication and Journalism department of DU said “Attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal means attack on Bangladesh”.

Similar attempts were made to kill writer Humayun Azad and blogger Avijit Roy, he added.  He also said, “We have to be united in resisting terrorism and militancy to establish peace and security in life”. Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker called for a campaign to make people aware of the scourge of radicalisation.

Meanwhile, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote members , writers and publisher under the banner of ‘Creative Publishers’ formed a human chain on Central Shaheed Minar premises in the afternoon.

Dramatist Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Jote President Golam Kuddus, Secretary Hasan Arif and DU proctor among other addressed the human chain.

Dr Zafar Iqbal came under knife attack on the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Saturday afternoon. He is now undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

Earlier teachers of Dhaka University under the banner of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) protested the attack on Monday.  

DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, "A vested quarter is trying to achieve political benefits centering upcoming national election that is why we have to be alert about the evil activities".
