Mashrafe claims four wickets consecutively

Sports Reporter

While Bangladesh saw two players claiming four wickets in four deliveries in T20 cricket and first class cricket, the List A cricket didn’t see any bowler with this kind of record until Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, the ODI captain, filled the void.

At the age of 34, with the twilight of his career, it was feat that was the indication how venomous he became as the time progressed. Mashrafe had no even any hat-trick in any level of cricket until the feat against Agrani Bank in a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match yesterday.

Fast bowler Al-Amin Hossain and occasional off-spinner Mahmudullah Riyad had four wickets in four deliveries in row in T20 and first class cricket respectively. While Al-Amin achieved this rare feat against Abahani when he played for UCB-BCB XI in a Victory Day T20 tournament in 2013, Mahmudullah Riyad rather surprisingly did this in Bangladesh Cricket League (BCBL) in 2014.

Riyad however took four wickets in two innings when his side Central Zone played against BCB North Zone. In the first innings, he claimed Tanbir Hyder and Shuvashis Roy to bundle out North Zone before he took another two wickets of Taijul Islam and Muktar Ali of his first two balls in the second innings. Riyad overall snapped five wickets (three in the first and two in the second innings) in that match, amongst which four wickets came in consecutive deliveries.

Al-Amin Hossain however got five wickets in that particular T20 match in Sylhet. That was his last over in which in the first ball, he took out Mehedi Maruf and then conceded two runs in the second ball. Later in the last four balls, he removed Nazmul Hossain Milon, Suhrawardi Shuvo, Naeem Islam Junior and Nabil Samad.

Mashrafe was even not supposed to make such a record. It was unexpected, according to him but he was delighted at the outcome.

“Hat-trick was not in my mind when I came to bowl in the last over. I knew they needed 13 runs in the last over which was always tough,” said Mashrafe.

“I knew the batsmen would go for all out attack because they had no other way. So I decided to deliver cutters to perfect so that he couldn’t go for big. One or two runs were okay for me but I didn’t want them to hit boundaries.”

“It worked well as they went for big shot and got caught. I even couldn’t sense that I was on the verge of hat-trick because tension ran high then.”
