Khaleda’s lawyers want to meet her in jail

STAFF REPORTER

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s lawyers want to meet her in Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road in Dhaka to inform her about the developments regarding her appeal against the special court verdict and her release on bail, say sources. Khaleda’s three lawyers—Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president advocate Joynal Abedin, general secretary barrister Mahbubuddin Khokan and advocate Sanaullah Miah—on Sunday sought permission from the jail authorities to meet the former premier, who was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in a graft case and sent to jail on February 8. Deputy inspector general (prison) Touhidul Islam said he was unaware of the application made by Khaleda’s lawyers to meet her. When contacted, advocate Sanaullah Miah confirmed that they had sought permission to meet the BNP chairperson, but were yet to get the clearance. Replying to a question, Miah said they were hopeful about Khaleda’s release on bail within a couple of days. “The chairperson can get bail once the case records reach the High Court (HC) from the lower court,” he added. A five-member team of Khaleda’s family met her last week. Besides, people from different professions, including Dhaka University teachers, doctors, players and artists, tried to meet her, but they were denied permission. Meanwhile, the BNP will form human chains across the country from 11am to 12 noon today, demanding Khaleda Zia’s release.
