Culprits to face justice: IGP
UNB

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday visited Dr Zafar Iqbal, who is received treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka Cantonment after being injured in a knife attack on the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet on Saturday, reports UNB. She went to the CMH around 12:30pm and spent almost an hour there, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters. Meanwhiler, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwari yesterday said the culprits behind the attack on noted writer Prof Zafar Iqbal will be brought to justice.

At the CMH, the prime minister talked to physicians and asked about the present condition of Dr Zafar Iqbal, a SUST teacher and renowned fiction writer. Zafar Iqbal’s wife Prof Yesmeen Huq and his daughter Yeashim Iqbal were also present. The prime minister asked the authorities concerned to do whatever needed for the treatment of Prof Zafar Iqbal, the PM’s press secretary said.

On Saturday, a young man swooped on Dr Zafar Iqbal, a teacher of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of the university, around5:40pmas he was sitting on the stage of a celebration programme, ‘Robofight,’ of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department at Mukta Mancha.

The attacker stabbed him in the back of his head, leaving him seriously injured. He was then taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, and then airlifted to the CMH in Dhaka at the instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Meanwhile, addressing a programme at Jagannath University, IGP Javed Patwari said the police will find the culprits behind this attack.

“We have started investigation to find out those who else were involved in the attack. As we could not interrogate the arrestee Faizur due to his illness, we’ll find out the culprits behind the attack,” he said. “Faizur Rahman, who was arrested in connection with the attack on the prominent writer Zafar Iqbal, has been personally influenced by the fanaticism,” he added.

I hope people from all walks of life will come forward to root out militancy from the country, said the IGP. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia, who was also present at the programme, said, “The attack on Zafar Iqbal was not carried out by an organised militant group as we have already destroyed the organised militant network. There is nothing to be worried.”
