Sports Reporter

Sheikh Russell Sports Development Academy emerged the champions of the Dhaka First Division Women’s Cricket League for the 2017-18 season after defeating City Club by 12 runs in the final at the BKSP on Saturday.

By winning the final, Sheikh Russell promoted to the Dhaka Premier Division Women’s Cricket League.

Put in to bat, Sheikh Russell Sports Development Academy put on a modest 172 for seven in 40 overs with Tahin Tahera topscoring 38.

She was assisted by Rupa Roy (28), Rokaiya Ahmed Roya (22 not out) and Mumta Hena (18) to bolster the total. Sadia Akhter picked up two for 25, while Fatema Tuz Zohra snapped up one wicket for 29.

Fatema-Tuz-Zohra’s half-century failed to save City Club from defeat as they finally were all-out for 160 in 39.5 overs to chase down the target. Mumta Hena and Rokaiya Ahmed Roya evenly shared six wickets between them. Player-of-the-match Hena gave away 19 runs and player of the tournament Roya (100 runs and 16 wickets in seven outings) conceded 39 runs to take up their stakes. For City Club, Fatema-Tuz-Zohra (57) sparked with bat following her bowling stint. Tanjila Akhter (29) and Asha Akhter (16) made their contributions with Fatema.

Hena was also the highest wicket-taker (21 wickets in seven ties) and Mishu Khan, who was also player of Sheikh Russell, scored 309 runs in the same number of matches.

BCB director and its women’s cricket committee chairman Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel as the chief guest distributed trophy among the winners.
