A two-week solo art exhibition titled ‘Smoron 71’ (Remembrance: 1971) by artist Shah Mainul Islam Shilpu is underway at the La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) in Dhanmondi

of the capital.

Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest on Friday evening, while artist Chandra Shekhar Dey, art critic Moinuddin Khaled and chief executive of SKS Foundation Rasel Ahmed Liton were present as the special guests.

There are around 35 artworks of the artist on display in this exhibition and the medium has used are pen and ink.

As a conscious human being everyone holds varying degrees of social responsibility. Since Shilpu is a painter, he believes that he has a great deal of social responsibility on his shoulders. Through paintings his responsibility manifests as he find 1971, the year we achieved our freedom sacrificing unprecedented number of lives in a nine-month long bloody war, the fountainhead of inspiration and profound understanding that we, as a country, must not disremember. All the artist’s pen-and-ink drawings in this exhibition depict 1971 as well as its after-effects. If the artist’s artworks remind any observers about our resolve in the face of tribulations, bloodshed, oppression, and inhumanity; or how we strove to attain our freedom in 1971; or how can we protect our independence — the artist will consider his efforts successful.

The exhibition remains open to all until March 14 and can be visited according to the following schedule: Monday to Thursday from 3 pm to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday (9 am to 12 noon and 5 pm to 8 pm; closed on Sunday.

AFD: 26 Mirpur Road, Dhanmondi
