Myanmar ‘withdraws’ heavy weapons from border

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said Myanmar has removed its heavy weaponry and troops from Tambru border at Naikhongchhari in Bandarban following a flag meeting between Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and Border Guard Police (BGP). The minister also told reporters that the Myanmar authorities deployed their troops with heavy weapons along the border upon receiving wrong information.

Khan was talking to reporters after attending a programme at Farmgate in the capital. “The members of the BGB and BGP will jointly patrol their respective border areas from March 27,” he said. Reply to a question, the home minister said that the repatriation of Myanmar citizen known as Rohingyas will begin soon.

Earlier on Thursday, BGB members were put on high alert after Myanmar deployed additional forces of BGP and its army along the Tambru border with heavy weapons.

The Myanmar side also remained silent for about 24 hours despite BGB sent a message to them requesting for a flag meeting.

The foreign ministry summoned the Myanmar envoy in Dhaka, Lwin Oo, to seek clarification and protested the deployment.

Following Dhaka protests, the Myanmar side on Friday defended their deployment of additional members of BGP and army saying the move was prompted for the sake of its ‘internal security’.
