Weeklong Bangladesh Street Theatre Fest underway

A weeklong Bangladesh Patha Natak Utsab 2018 (Bangladesh Street Theatre Festival), that began on March 1, is underway on the premises of Central Shaheed Minar in the capital and already staged a number of shows.

Bangladesh Pathanatak Parishad has organised the festival with the theme ‘Chai Nishongko Chitto, Gori Manab Muktir Britto’.

Noted director-actor Mamunur Rashid inaugurated the weeklong street theatre festival as chief guest on March 1, while Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Golam Kuddus, theatre activist Jhuna Chowdhury and Bangladesh Abriti Samannay Parishad general secretary Ahkamullah were present as special guests during the ceremony.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Bangladesh Pathanatak Parishad president Mannan Hira, while convener of Bangladesh Pathanatak Utsab Parishad Dr Mohammad Bari delivered the welcome speech at the event.

On the inaugural ceremony, Samay Natyadal staged its play ‘Kobor’ directed by Akhtaruzzaman while Sadanonda Sarkar and his troupe from Khulna presented Kabigaan.

On the second day of the festival yesterday, Comilla Natyadal staged ‘Rajar Khel’, while Panchagarh-based troupe Bhumij staged Chithi, Dhaka-based troupes Chandrakala Theatre and Sattwik Natyagoshthi staged ‘Jadi Kichhu Mone Na Koren’ and ‘Gulmat and Gong’ respectively.

Besides, Manikganj-based cultural troupe Grambangla Natyasangstha performed Ghetu gaan yesterday.

Today, the festival will feature Mamtazuddin Ahmed retrospective where four troupes Songsaptak Natyadal, Moitree Theatre, Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC) and Theatre will stage four plays penned by the renowned playwright.

 The weeklong festival will run till March 7.

To note, Bangladesh Pathanatak Parishad has been organising the street theatre festival on the premises of Central Shaheed Minar since 2002.
