‘BNP to publish whitepaper on graft if voted to power’

BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed yesterday said a whitepaper on the corruption during the current Awami League-led government will be published to put its corrupt elements on trial if their party is voted to power, reports UNB. "This government is not the last one, and it will have to go someday. After that, a whitepaper on corruption being committed during its rule will be published," he said. Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by National People's Party (NPP), demanding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's release and a credible election under a non-party administration.

In the whitepaper, he said, the names of ministers, MPs and businessmen backed by them, from the centre to district level, will be included with elaborate description of their corruption. "They must be put on trial on that day." He said they will also include in the whitepaper the names of those were involved in share market, Hallmark, Destiny scams, Bangladesh Bank heist and all other corruption incidents reported in the media over the last 10 years.

The BNP leader alleged that corruption has turned epidemic during the rule of this government for lack of its accountability. He said big projects are being implemented by the government with big corruption, commission and bribery for lack of monitoring and accountability.

Moudud, a former law minister, said their party chief Khaleda Zia was convicted for political reason, not for corruption. He alleged that now the government is plotting to delay the bail for Khaleda and prolong her stay in jail. "Begum Khaleda Zia will surely be released on bail, no matter how much plots and strategies you (govt) resort to."

The BNP leader criticised the Election Commission (EC) saying it has no capability to hold a credible and neutral national election. "We've sent a letter to the Election Commission (regarding PM's election campaign). The Commission has said it will assert its authority after the announcement of the election schedule. With that comment, they (EC) have exposed that they're unable to hold a fair election."

Moudud said the Prime Minister and her cabinet colleagues are seeking votes for their election symbol 'boat' through their unilateral campaign spending public money while BNP is not allowed to hold any political programme and its chairperson has been kept in jail. "What a nice democracy and atmosphere in the country indeed!" He said Awami League should not consider the country's people fool as they understand everything. "They (people) will give you a big lesson, if they get a chance to cast their votes."
