Two ‘drug peddlers’ arrested

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 in a drive arrested two drug peddlers along with 348 bottles of phensidyl from Shuvopur bus station under Sadarghat Police Station in the port city Chittagong on Wednesday night.

The arrestees were identified as Md Faruk Patwari, 34, son of late Abul Khayer Patwari of Bou Bazar village of Halishahar, and Md Subuj, 28, son of late Abu Sayed of Charpara village in Chouddgram upazila of Comilla district.

Acting on a tip-off, the elite force set up a check post and conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo with the contraband phensidyl worth Tk 2.78 lakh around 11pm, said a Rab press release.  The team also seized their private car, it added. A case was filed with Sadarghat Police Station.

Schoolgirl commits ‘suicide’

A schoolgirl allegedly committed suicide by taking poison at Boridbashail village in Durgapur municipality area in Rajshahi on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Mitu Akhter, 14, daughter of late Shafiqul Islam of the village, said Inspector Mizanur Rahman of Durgapur Police Station.

According to local Councilor Jahurul Islam Miron, Mitu had love affair with a local boy. On Monday, the boy accompanied Mitu to Sirajganj. Later, he took away her jewelry and mobile phone and sent her back to home. Since then, the boy stopped communicating Mitu.

Later on Wednesday morning, Mitu took poison at her room over a family feud. She died on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, police said.

A case of unnatural death was filed with the police station, said the inspector.

Seminar on improving

public services held

A daylong seminar titled ‘Improving Public Services through Total Quality Management’ at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner in Rajshahi yesterday.

Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) organised the workshop in association with JICA.

In the programme speakers underscored the need for making public services people-oriented so that common people could derive total benefit of the public services.

Director of BPATC Jahidul Islam addressed the event as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair. Additional Deputy Commissioners Md Salahuddin and Nasima Khatun also spoke.

The chief guest said people-friendly public service is very vital for full-length reflection of the hopes and aspirations of the mass- people.
