Senior UN HR official due today

Diplomatic Correspondent

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Andrew Gilmour arrives in the country today on a four-day visit to see the conditions of hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas, who had to flee their homes in Rakhine to escape from the atrocities of the Myanmar security forces, local Buddhist mobs and people from other ethnic groups.

Gilmour will be in Cox’s Bazar from 2 to 4 March, where he will visit Rohingya camps and speak to those who fled across the border in recent weeks, said a press release forwarded by the office of high commissioner for human rights in Geneva yesterday. Gilmour will also meet local government officials and NGOs, as well as UN and other humanitarian partners.

In Dhaka, Gilmour is due to meet with senior government officials and officials of National Human Rights Commission to discuss the human rights situation in Cox’s Bazar. At the end of his four-day visit, the UN assistant secretary-general will issue a statement to the media.
