Embassy in Myanmar sans ambassador over a month

Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan

Amidst the ongoing Rohingya crisis, Bangladesh’s embassy in Myanmar remains without an ambassador for more than a month due to the transition from one envoy to another.

The newly-appointed ambassador to Myanmar, Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury, who was the immediate-past director general of the South East Asia wing of the foreign ministry, which covers Myanmar, was due to leave Dhaka for Kuala Lumpur last night, said officials concerned.

Spending a few days in Kuala Lumpur, he is likely to arrive in Yangon on Monday to take the charge of the mission, they said. Of course, they pointed out that it will take some time for him to officially begin his activities as the ambassador, as he will have to present his credentials to the president of Myanmar and sometimes it takes time. In the meantime, an official of the commercial wing of the embassy is in charge, said the officials.

The post of the ambassador fell vacant as the previous ambassador Sufiur Rahman had to leave Yangon to take the charge of Bangladesh High Commission in Australia, they said.

Sufiur Rahman took the responsibility of the high commission in Canberra on January 31, they added.

“The activities of the mission are not being hampered as there are other officers there, and the headquarters were and are in constant touch with them,” claimed a senior official of the foreign ministry.

Earlier, Rezina Ahmed, consul general of the consulate general in Milan, Italy, was appointed as the country’s next ambassador to Myanmar and the government in Naypyitaw approved her appointment, said the sources.

The sources said, later, perhaps considering the magnitude and gravity of the problems between the two countries, the government changed its mind in regards to Rezina Ahmed and decided to appoint director general of the South East Asia wing Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury as the ambassador to Myanmar.

The sources further said that Chowdhury, who was earlier appointed as the deputy chief of mission in the embassy in China, has done a ‘very good job’ as the director general of the South East Asia wing, prompting the authorities to send him to Myanmar in this critical situation.

However, they said that Rezina Ahmed is also a capable officer with experience of serving the embassy in Yangon.

Rezina was now selected as the country’s new high commissioner to Mauritius and she is now waiting for the approval of the host government.

Meanwhile, some embassies and consulates general are going to have new envoys and senior officials.

Shameem Ahsan, consul general of the consulate general in New York , was given appointment as the high commissioner to Mauritius , but it had to be changed due to Rezina Ahmed.

Now, Shameem Ahsan has been selected as the high commissioner to Nigeria .

The joining of director general of the United Nations wing of the ministry Sadia Faizunnesa as the consul general of the consulate general in New York is being delayed due to the changes.

Monwar Hossain, director general of the South Asia wing, has been appointed at the permanent mission in New York.

Counsellor at the Bangladesh high commission in Ottawa, Canada Nayeem U Ahmed has been appointed as consul general of the newly-established consulate general in Toronto, Canada while Miah Mainul Kabir, counsellor at the deputy high commission in Kolkata, has been made consul general in consulate general in Sydney in Australia.

Iqbal Ahmed, director of the foreign secretary’s office, has been made the consul general at the consulate general in Milan to replace Rezina Ahmed.
