Bangladesh aim to become champs

Mahbub Harun, head coach of the national hockey team, is very much confident to be the champions in the qualifying round of the Jakarta Asian Games when the team is to leave for Oman on March 6. Harun, along with his other two deputies started the practice on January 12 and  now are in finishing stage when the team is now almost ready to fly for Oman to play the qualifying round due to start from March 7. Bangladesh will begin their campaign from March 9.

Harun, while talking with this correspondent yesterday at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium before going for the evening session practice said that all of his players and he was committed to qualify in the final round as the champions in the qualifying phase.

“I am full-fledged ready to play matches, right now we are giving finishing touch, we are now doing the set play for maximum times – like penalty corner defense, penalty corner attacks, short corner defense, long corner defense, how we will build up game against the different opponents and how we will finish.”

Bangladesh, who comprised with some easy opponents along with Indonesia, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Thailand but Harun explained in other ways, as he said, “Actually, I never take anybody as easy opponents, all nine teams will be there to qualify, so all the nine teams are good to me, might be we are a better ranking team in our group, ‘Inshallah’ it would be not difficult for us to win.”

“Actually, teams are in our group, apart from Hong Kong and Thailand, Indonesia and Afghanistan are unknown to us. I did never see their games before and Bangladesh never played any match against these two teams.”

Whether the players are in relaxed mood after having easy opponents in the group phase, Harun said, “No way to be in relaxed mood, what the mistakes we did in the Asia Cup, besides China against all, it was also true that all the teams were higher ranking than us. Players realised and committed not to repeat and to do better to qualify as the champions in the qualifying phase.
