Govt delaying Khaleda bail process: BNP

STAFF REPORTER

The BNP yesterday alleged that the release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail was getting delayed due to the interference of the government. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the allegation at a press conference at the party’s central office in Naya Paltan yesterday. The press meet was apparently held in response to the law minister’s claim that BNP lawyers were to blame for the delay. Alamgir said Khaleda’s lawyers were dealing with the case in a very skilled and experienced manner and said the government had “hatched a plot” against BNP and that “the verdict of the case was pre-planned”.

He accused the government of turning the judiciary into a farcical one and said it was resorting to different tactics to delay the bail of the jailed chairperson.

The BNP lawyers filed an appeal in High Court against the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case verdict after receiving its certified copy 10 days after it was delivered by the lower court. The HC had said it would give a directive on the bail petition after receiving documents from the lower court.

Alamgir alleged that the government wanted to prolong Khaleda’s imprisonment to keep her out of the election process.

The BNP leader also said the report that Dr Kamal Hossain had rejected his proposal was “false and baseless”. He said the Gana Forum leader had told him that he would give them legal advice after going through the case verdict.

Mirza Alamgir condemned the “repressive measures” of the government on the opposition leaders and activists, saying that the BNP cannot be split by repression.

Regarding the BNP’s letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, he said they sent it to point out that the Awami League had started electioneering even before the poll schedule had been announced while the opposition was not being allowed to hold rallies. He said it was the responsibility of the Election Commission (EC) to stop the one-sided electioneering and create a level playing field for all. “If the EC fails to do so, it will be proved that it is assisting the government,” he added.

Standing committee member Mirza Abbas and vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu, among others, were present at the press

conference.
