Unidentified youth killed in city road crash

An unidentified youth was killed in a road accident in Kollyanpur area under Darus Salam Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday.

Quoting local people, Sub-inspector of Darus Salam Police Station Abu Sayed said the accident took place in the area around 4:45am when a garbage-laden vehicle hit the youth, leaving him dead on the spot.  On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the SI added.

Barisal city corporation cleaner found dead

Barisal: A cleaner of Barisal City Corporation was found dead in a pond in Kaunia Baganbari area of the city yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Hanif, son of Hashem Gorami, a resident of Bou Bazar area.

Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kaunia Police Station, said local people spotted the body around 10am and informed police.

Later, police recovered the body. Police suspected that Hanif fell into the pond after being electrocuted.

Mill worker killed after being stuck in machine

Chittagong: A paper mill worker was killed in his factory when he was caught up in machine at Roufabad under Bayazid Bostami Police Station of the port city yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Rakib, 21, son of Abdul Mannan of the same police station area.

Confirming the matter, Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukdar of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) outpost, said that Rakib got stuck in the machine while he was on duty around 6.30am and sustained injury.

Later, he was admitted to CMCH where doctors declared him dead, the SI added.

36 arrested in drive, drug seized

Rajshahi: Police arrested 36 people from different areas in the district in special drives from Tuesday evening to yesterday morning.

Iftekhar Alam, senior assistant police commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said police launched drives in different areas under four police stations of the city and arrested them.

Among the arrestees, 15 were arrested from Boalia Police Station, eight from Rajpara, eight from Motihar, one from Shah Makhdum and four from different areas.

Of them, 18 were warranted accused while 10 arrested with drug and eight arrested for various offenses.  

Police claimed that they recovered 286 pieces of yaba pills, 100 bottles of phensedyl and four grams of heroin.

Torture on Manikganj AL leader alleged

Awami League nomination seeker for next national polls from Manikganj-3 constituency Dr Rafiqul Islam at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday claimed that he was tortutred by his rivals.

A gang of 10-15 criminals tortured him on February 23 and threatened not to contest in the upcoming national polls from Manikganj-3 constituency, Rafiqul alleged.

He also alleged that the criminals had tortured him at Saturia during a campaign. They also snatched away Tk 2.2 lakh, national identity card and two mobile phone sets, he claimed. “I am president of Missouri state of the USA AL unit. I am interested to contest in the next polls from this constituency,” Rafiqul said.  

Rafiqul was taken to Saturia and beaten there in presence of  Manikganj district AL joint secretary Sultanul Azam Papel and Manikganj Sadar Upazila AL unit president Afsar Uddin Sarker, he claimed.
