Universities observe Int’l Mother Language Day

Different public and private universities observed The International Mother Language Day with due respect and in a befitting manner, paying rich tributes to martyrs of the historic Language Movement of 1952

To commemorate the day, RU authorities placed floral wreaths at the university central Shaheed Minar at 12:01am yesterday. During the time, RU VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan, Pro-VC Prof Ananda Kumar Saha and other high-ranked officials were present.

Different socio-cultural and political organidations including Rajshahi University Teachers Association, Progressive Teachers Society, placed floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.  A discussion on International Mother Language Day was held at university Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium and an art and hand writing competition was held at the university senate building. A milad mahfil was also held after the Zohr prayer at university central mosque. To observe the day, JU Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam accompanied by Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq other officials paid homage to the martyrs. Earlier, a cultural function was also held on Central Shaheed Minar premises on Tuesday evening organized by JU Teacher-Student Centre.

Jagannath University (JnU) Vice-chancellor Prof Mijanur Rahman paid tributes to the language martyrs by placing a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar at 6am along with JnU Registrar Engineer Md Wahiduzzaman, teachers, students, officers, journalists and employees. Several programmes, including poetry recitation was held marking the day.

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in observance of the day chalked out different programmes including morhing procession, led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Ali Akbar, from the university club to the central Shaheed Minar on the campus.  Special prayer was also offered at the central mosque and different mosques of the resident halls.   

North South University (NSU) organised a discussion marking the day. Mohammed Shajahan, Chairman, BOT was present was the chief guest. In the event, there was a symposium regarding the history and cultural significance of International Mother Language Day. The programme ended with a cultural session.

In Eastern University, teachers, students, and officials brought out a morhing procession marking the day. The procession ended with the bouquet presentation ceremony at the Shahid Minar in the university campus, which was erected in the honour of remembering the Language Martyrs.

Later, a discussion on the ‘International Mother Language Day’ was held at the University Seminar Hall.  In Gono Bishwabidyalay, university Vice-chancellor (Acting) Prof Laila Parveen Banu along with other faculty members, officials placed wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar and paid homage to the Language heroes who sacrificed lives for the mother tongue of Bangladesh.

SUST team develops Bangla keyboard with AI

Sylhet: 'Ekushey Bangla' a keyboard with artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time was inaugurated at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Tuesday, a day before the International Mother Language Day.

Eminent author and SUST teacher Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal inaugurated the swift keyboard at MA Wazed Miah IICT Building of the university.

A team of Computer Science and Engraining (CSE) Department led by Assistant Professor Biswapriyo Chakrabarty developed the keyboard. The other members of the team are, Uthu Nu, Biddha Chandra Banik, Goutam Chowdhury and Faisal Haque - all students. While inaugurating the keyboard, Zafar Iqbal said "As the keyboard is built with artificial intelligence, it will be able to understand automatically what the user wishes to write. Previously annoyingly we had to use English letters for writing Bangla words but from now it will not happen."

 "Anyone without knowing to type properly will be able to learn typing on the keyboard with artificial intelligence and swiftness, users can write on it only with touch.", he added.

Assistant professor Biswapriyo Chakrabarty said "After entering first few letters on the keyboard, it will be able to understand the require massage of the user's mind automatically." They will be updating the keyboard on regular basis, he said.

Chairman of Computer Science and Engraining (CSE) department, Dr Reza Salim, Professor Dr. Shahidur Rahman and Professor Dr. Jahirul Islam were also present there.

53 to vie for each seat in CoU admission test

Comilla: As many as 53 students will vie for one seat in the first year honours admission test of Comilla University (CoU) under the academic session of 2017-18.

The university authorities have sold 54,809 application forms against 1,040 seats under six faculties, said university registrar and admission test committee Member Secretary Md Mojibur Rahman Majumder.

A total of 23,625 students have applied for 350 seats under 'A' unit (science and engineering faculties), 19,372 for 450 seats under 'B' unit (arts, social science and law faculties), 11,812 for 240 seats under 'C' unit (business studies), he added.

As per the schedule, the admission tests for 'A' and 'B' unit will be held on February 23 (Friday) and 'C' unit on February 24 (Saturday).
