BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday suggested the ruling Awami League leaders not to lose their sleep over the BNP’s constitution and its leadership, and oil their own machines instead. “You (ruling party leaders) cannot sleep due to your thoughts and worries about our party constitution. You are getting a headache over who had been made the chairman of our party,” he said while speaking at a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.National Peoples Party, an ally of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, organised the meeting with its president Advocate Dr Fariduzzaman in the chair.
Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) leader Mostafa Jamal Haider, Kallyan Party chief Maj Gen (retd) Syed Muhammed Ibrahim, Nitay Roy Chowdhury and Rehana Akter, among others, addressed the meeting.
Meanwhile, speaking at a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party chairperson Khaleda Zia would be freed through a mass-movement. The BNP chief landed in jail on 8 February after a trial court sentenced her to five years in jail. Pro-BNP Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad organised the programme demanding immediate release of Fakhrul alleged that a conspiracy is being hatched so that Khaleda Zia cannot join the next polls. The BNP leader described Khaleda as the symbol of country’s sovereignty and said she should be freed through a national unity of all, irrespective of party affiliation.
He also accused, what he said, illegitimate and immoral government of Awami League of going ahead to implement its blueprint as part of its long-term plan of keeping Khaleda Zia away from politics.
