BCL infightings hurt 9 at CU, RU

Six activists were injured yesterday in a clash between two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Chittagong University (CU) unit, the student front of the ruling Awami League over silly matter on the campus. The injured were identified as Tamzil Hridoy, a student of political science department, academic session is 2014-2015 and Mizan Fakir, student of Chemistry department, academic session is 2012-2013. They were known as activists of a group named ‘Sixty Nine’ and follower of Alamgir Tipu, former president of CU BCL. Alamgir is a loyalist of Chiitagong City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin Chowdhury.

Other injured were identified as Sayon Das Gupta, a student of statistics department, academic session is 2010-2011 and Saiful Islam, student of accounting department, academic session is 2014-2015. They were known as activists of a group named ‘Bijoy’ and follower of Fazle Rabby Sujan, former general secretary of CU BCL. Sujan, also known as follower of late ABM Mahiuddin Chowdhury, president of port city Awami League and former mayor.

Sources said some junior activists of the two group were locked in an altercation in front of Biological Faculty over silly matter. When this news spread among all activists of the two groups, they again locked in a clash in front of Amanat Hall and Shahjalal Hall.

They pelted stones and exchange abusive language each other. Law enforcers fired three round of bullet and tear shell to take the situation under control.

 “We have given six students primary treatment. Of them, three were sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in a critical condition,” said Dr Abu Tayob, medical chief of CU medical centre.    

Liton Mitra, assistant proctor of CU said “After hearing this news we rushed to the spot along with cops to bring the situation under control. Now the situation is under control. Till now we do not get any complaint.”

A tense situation has been prevailing on the campus following the incident.

UNB adds from Rajshahi: At least three Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men were injured in a factional clash in the city on Sunday.

The injured are Md Rasel, vice-president of Rajshahi University (RU) unit BCL, Anik Mahmud Boni, an expelled leader of the unit, and Mithu, an activist of Rajshahi College unit BCL. They were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Police arrested BCL men Sabuj and Tushar, also cousins of Rasel, over the clash.

RU campus sources said Boni, also a student of the Economics Department, along with some of his followers swooped on Rasel when he went to Binodpur adjacent to the university campus for taking tea.

Being informed, Rasel’s cousins Sabuj and Tushar along with their followers rushed in and attacked Boni with sharp weapons, triggering a clash between the two groups.

On information, police rushed in, took the situation under control and arrested Sabuj and Tushar from the spot, said Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Matihar Police Station.
