Topsoil extraction

Topsoil extraction

It is worrying to note that some unscrupulous people have been doing brisk business by extracting topsoil in Jhenidah. This unabated phenomenon of removing the fertile top layer of the soil is posing a threat not only to agriculture, but also to the environment. According to a report of this newspaper on Sunday, a number of people were digging out topsoil from several plots and loading the same on a trolley. The soil was being taken to a nearby brick kiln. A trolley full of topsoil sells for Tk. 700. It is not only happening in Jhenidah. It is the scenario of the whole country. Most of the farmers do not know what a destruction they are inviting for themselves.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the country’s economy and production of crops is vital for feeding the burgeoning population. Only fertile lands can grow crops up to the satisfaction of the farmers. If lands lose fertility how can they grow crops? In that case food production will be imperiled and it will be disastrous for the country. Most of the farmers do not know anything about the detrimental effects of topsoil removal. According to environmentalists removal of topsoil is harmful for both agricultural production and the environment. As topsoil contains most of the nutrients, soil productivity drops when this layer is removed. This compels farmers to lean towards chemical farming as the soil loses its natural productivity. The practice also affects the environment, as useful insects that live on and beneath the ground are badly affected.

The owners of brick kilns are doing the mischief. They are enticing the gullible farmers with cash incentives to sell topsoil of their lands. The farmers are swallowing the baits not knowing the consequences. By losing fertility lands are fast becoming unfit for growing crops. This is leaving an adverse impact on the overall agricultural production in the country. This is a hazardous trend to say the least. What is needed is the public awareness against this malpractice.

Brick manufacturing is needed for the development of the country but not at the risk of hampering food production and polluting the environment. The brick kiln owners should be warned not to entice the farmers any more. Farmers should be made aware to refrain from selling topsoil of their lands. Field officials of the agriculture department can hold meetings with farmers from time to time about the adverse impact of topsoil selling.
