Govt wants to score goal in empty field: BNP

STAFF REPORTER

Reacting to the comments made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a press briefing yesterday, BNP alleged that the government wants to score a goal in an empty field, but the people would not allow them to do that. “Do you (Prime Minister) want to score a goal in an empty field? The people will not accept it,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul while talking to reporters at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier briefed the media at Ganabhaban in the capital, on the outcome of her recent visit to Italy and Vatican City, where she said the government has nothing to do if the BNP decides to boycott the next national election and that the polls will be held on time.

The BNP leader termed the premier’s statement over the BNP and its chairperson ‘worthless lies’ and said the government held a lopsided general election in 2014 which was not acceptable.

“This time, they also want to hold another lopsided election. But election excluding the BNP and Khaleda Zia will not be acceptable to the people,” he added. Criticising the premier for discussing the BNP constitution, Mirza Fakhrul questioned why she (Sheikh Hasina) feels a headache over their (BNP) constitution.

Replying to another question, he said party Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman has been made the party’s acting chairman following the party constitution that was adopted in the last council.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the BNP standing committee was in progress, while the report was filed at 7:30pm, to discuss the latest development in the political arena.
