BNP platform for the corrupt, says Quader

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday alleged that the BNP has become a platform for corrupt people as its chairman, Khaleda Zia, has recently been awarded five years' imprisonment and its acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, convicted in connection with a graft case. Quader said that contrary to their claims, BNP leaders have actually failed to launch an effective movement owing to organisational weakness. “Had they the organizational strength to launch unyielding agitation on the streets, these leaders would have carried out violent actions as they used to do in the past,” he added. Quader, who is also the road, transport and bridges minister, was addressing a joint meeting at the Priyanka Community Centre in front of the Dhanmondi party office. The meeting was organised to ensure that the party’s March 7 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan would be a grand success.

The AL leader also said that BNP leaders expected the people would join their anti-government movement soon after Khaleda's arrest. “But they have been proven wrong as the people are satisfied with the development efforts of the government,” he added.

He also raised questions as to how the BNP abolished Section 7 of its party constitution without holding a council session. Referring to the upcoming general election, Quader asserted that the next parliamentary election will be free, fair and inclusive as the BNP will take part in the polls. “The BNP will participate in the next general election even if their party chief, Khaleda Zia, remains in prison”, he added.
