Vegetable prices stable in capital

Tomatoes and gourd cheaper for increased supply
Staff Reporter
Vegetable prices stable in capital

Vegetable prices in the capital’s kitchen markets are stable as in the previous week. In the wake of an increased supply of vegetables, prices of gourd and tomatoes decreased this week.

Tomatoes are being sold at Tk 15–20 a kg and gourd at Tk 50.

Onion, eggplant, beans, carrot, cauliflower, cabbage, turnip, red spinach, garlic and other vegetables are being sold at the previous week's price. The prices of eggs, chicken and mutton, too, remain unchanged.

Visiting several retail kitchen markets in Dhaka, including Karwanbazar, this reporter found that vendors were selling some vegetables at last week’s prices.

Traders said the supply of gourd and tomato in the market has increased, resulting in a fall in prices from last week’s. The gourd price dropped by more than half of last week’s level.

The trader further said the demand for gourd is usually high during the winter. Its price had shot up due to a low supply. Now there are enough gourd and tomato in the market, resulting in a drop in prices.

If the supply flow and the weather remain good, vegetable prices would fall further, said a wholesaler at Karwanbazar.

In markets, including Karwanbazar, cauliflower sold at Tk 20-30 as in the previous week; cabbage is available at the same price; turnip is being sold at Tk 20-25; eggplant between Tk 30 and 40; beans Tk 50-60.

The price of chillies is Tk 70-80 per kg. Onions are being sold at the previous week's price. In the retail market, the domestic onion is being sold for Tk 50-55. Imported onions have the same price.

Karwanbazar wholesale onion traders said they sold onions for Tk 42-43 a kg. The price of onions has remained stable for a week.
