BNP set to hold another round of demonstrations

Staff Reporter

The BNP will go for another round of peaceful demonstrations across the country next week, demanding the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia. As part of the programme, the party will begin a mass signature campaign from Saturday, submit a memorandum to the offices of deputy commissioners (DCs) on Sunday, and stage demonstrations across the country, except in Dhaka, on Tuesday. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the fresh programme at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city yesterday. The second round of the party's peaceful agitation programme ended on Wednesday with the staging of a token hunger strike in the city and other parts of the country.

Announcing the programme, Fakhrul said they would also hold a public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka. The date of the rally would be finalised soon, he added. “Beyond the announced programme, we’ll hold a public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan. We’ll seek permission for it after confirming the date at party forum,” he said.

He expressed hope that the authorities concerned would allow them to hold the meeting. The BNP leader accused the government of intentionally delaying the issuance of the certified copy of the court judgment against Khaleda Zia. “We’re yet to get the certified copy of the verdict, though a week has already passed after it was delivered. The government is intentionally delaying its release,” he said.

Fakhrul also said they fear that the government is conspiring to keep Khaleda Zia in jail for a long period. “The government is trying to forcibly stop our peaceful programme,” he added. The BNP leader reiterated that want peace in a bid to create a congenial political atmosphere in the country so that people could freely exercise their voting rights. As in other years, the BNP will place wreaths at Shaheed Minar on February 21 to pay homage to martyrs of the Language Movement, he said.

A special court on February 8 sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was then sent to Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu, Abdul Awal Mintoo, Nitay Chandra Roy, Joynal Abedin Faruk, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, were present at the press conference.
