UP chairman shot dead

A union parishad chairman was shot to death in an attack by some criminals in Lohagara upazila parishad premises yesterday. The victim was identified as Sheikh Latifur Rahman Polash, chairman of Dighlia union parishad of the upazila. Officer-in-charge Lohagara police station Monirul Islam said the crimianls attacked Polash at noon and  hacked and shot him to death. Police is looking into the matter, the OC said.

Hundi trader held with Tk 64 lakh

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a Hundi trader along with Tk 64 lakh from Raghunathpur in Sharsha upazila here on Wednesday night. The arrestee was identified as Babu Mia, 43, son of Late Ramjan Ali of Sarbanghuda village in Sarsha upazila. Tipped off that a hundi trader was coming from India with huge money, a BGB team lead by Habildar Mamun-or-Rashid arrested Babu Mia, said 49 BGB Commander Lt Col Ariful Haque. The arrestee was handed over to Benapole Port Police Station, he added.

One killed, 2 hurt in clash   

Sunamganj: An elderly man was killed and two people sustained injuries in a clash between two groups of villagers over occupying a water body in Dirai upazila yesterday, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as Majnu Miah, 60, son of late Alam Ulalh of Tetoiya village in the upazila. Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Dirai Police Station, said there is a longstanding dispute between Dunel of Kulanj village and UP member Abdul Ali of Tetoiya village over grabbing Tangni water body. As a sequel of the dispute, residents of two villages locked into a clash around 11:40am. A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee that left Manju dead on the spot and two people injured. Informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured were taken to the Upazila Health Complex.

SSC candidate ‘gang raped’

Chuadanga: A Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee was reportedly raped by a group of young men including her ‘lover’ at Khoerhuda village in Jibonnagar upazila on Wednesday night, reports UNB. The victim filed a case with Jibonnagar Police Station accusing three people, said Abdullah Al-Mamun, officer-in-charge of the police station. Later, police, with the help of local people, arrested main accused Ariful Islam, 27, said the OC adding that two other accused Jewel and Sirajul could not be held immediately. According to the case statement, the victim’s lover Ariful asked her to meet him near a maize field in the village while she was returning home after appearing the SSC exam. Later, Ariful along with two of his friends violated her. The accused also filmed the ‘rape’ incident and snatched her ornaments after the victim became senseless there, it also added.

Youth to die for killing woman

Sherpur: A court here on Wednesday awarded death sentence to a young man for killing a housewife after failing to violate her in Nalitabari upazila in 2011, reports UNB. The condemned convict is Ashraf Ali, 32, son of Kubbad Ali of Moakura village in the upazila. The court also fined him Tk 10,000. Ashraf became unconscious in the dock when the judge announced the judgment. According to the prosecution, Ashraf stormed into the house of his neighbour Hazera Khatun of the village at the dead of night on May 7, 2011 while she was asleep with her 18-month-old son and attempted to rape her. After failing to violate the housewife, Ashraf stabbed her indiscriminately, leaving her dead. However, she mentioned Ashraf’s name before succumbing to her injuries. Later, locals caught the killer and handed him over to police and victim’s father filed a case in this regard. On August 13, 2011, Detective Branch of police submitted a charge-sheet in the case.
