Reaction over khaleda sentencing

Khaleda graft proven: JSD

Jatiya Party keeps mum
Staff Reporter

Leaders of the Jatiya Party (JP), the main opposition in parliament and a close ally of the ruling Awami League, yesterday remained silent over the verdict against Khaleda Zia in a graft case, which sentenced the BNP chief to five years in prison and her son Tarique and four others each to 10-year prison terms. When contacted, JP Co-Chairman GM Quader said he would not comment on the matter. He, however, said that he had asked the office to issue a statement over the matter. Senior JP leader Ruhul Amin Howlader could not be contacted over the phone. His assistant personal secretary said the leader was not available for comment.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haq Inu, also the information minister, said yesterday’s judgment proves that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman did involve in corruption.

A media release signed by party Office Secretary Abdullahil Quaium, said now the BNP chief Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman have become corrupt in the eyes of law and the court.

“The present government did not interfere in the trial process. It was not a political case, it was corruption case,” the minister added.

When contacted, Rashed Khan Menon, president of Workers Party of Bangladesh, in his reaction said the Thursday’s verdict proves wrong the general misconception among the country’s people that a person is above the law, if he or she holds a big position in a political party.

“Now it has been established that none is above the law,” he said.
