Reaction over khaleda sentencing

None is above law: AL

The verdict on Zia Orphanage Trust graft case proved that the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman were occupied in corruption during their tenure, expressed the ruling party Awami League (AL) yesterday as part of its immediate reaction about the corruption verdict, delivered on yesterday noon, sentencing Khaleda with a five-years jail term and Tarique Rahman and four others for 10 years of imprisonment with a fine of Tk 2.10 crore each.

“The Thursday’s verdict in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case is not an issue between AL and BNP. It is a matter between the court and the accused in the case. But it has been proved through the verdict that none is above the law,” said AL leader Dr. Hasan Mahmud.

Hasan Mahmud, also a spokesperson of the ruling party, came up with the statement during the immediate reaction on behalf of the party. A press conference was held at the party President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office yesterday to register the reaction. Earlier, BNP Chairperson Khaleda was awarded imprisonment for five years after she was found guilty in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. Her eldest son and BNP’s Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and four others were sentenced for imprisonment for 10 years in the same case and a fine of Tk 2.10 crore each.

The AL leader, during the press meet, also said the issue was neither to be happy nor to be unhappy. The verdict proved that all are equal to law, he added.

He also alleged that the BNP leaders and activists tried to create anarchy across the country to foil the trial process but all their attempts turned failures for strong stance from the law enforcers.
