AL, BCL stage demo in capital

Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists staged demonstrations in different parts of the capital yesterday defying a ban imposed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The DMP imposed the restriction on processions, meetings and assembly from 4:00 am on Thursday until further notice to avert any possibility of confrontation over the delivery of judgement in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Activists and supporters of ruling AL and BCL, the associate student body of AL, many on board motorbikes, marched in processions in the capital chanting slogans.

Rallies were held by the ruling party supporters in different parts of the city including Aminbazar, Gabtoli, Mirpur, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and DU areas to thwart the BNP demonstrations. Motahar Hossain Prince, the DU unit Secretary of BCL said, “We are gathering here on the campus to bar Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists from causing anarchy.”

The gathering at the TSC was manned by different units of Dhaka city.  The regular academic activities at the university were hampered as students feared conflicts may ensue over the Khaleda verdict, said Abu Bakar, a student of DU Bangla department.
