Chittagong Abahani Limited riding on a penalty from Shakhawat Hossain Rony  moved into the final of the Walton Independence Cup football tournament with a runaway victory against Rahamtganj MFS yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

In an eventful second semifinal match, Shakhawat Rony converted the penalty at the late hour of the first half which became the match decider to bring the defending champions to final.

Ctg Abahani will now take on Arambagh KS in the final. The latter eliminated Sheikh Jamal in the semifinal.

In a bid to retain the title Chittagong Abahani looked very impressive with attacking mood right from the first whistle when they opened spaces very often breaking the defense line but lack of confidence from the forwards could not turn their some of strong moves into goals.

Rahamtganj MFS, who always appear as a big hurdle for the giants, were also not unlike on the day, as they just after dealing with the enormous pressure went to sharp counter attacks and also drew the first blood in the game.

Rahmatganj could make the story of the game in different way if  Helal’s sliding would find the net from the edge of the area and Mohammed Elias could convert a penalty on 73rd minute.

Rahmatganj went closer to score goal when Ctg Abahani goalkeeper left the post open while trying to grip a floating ball from Faysal’s right side cross but missed the flight. But with no avail as Helal’s quick sliding shot went over the post on 11th minute.

The Chittagong outfit dumped away the great scare, responded strongly just after a minute and were about to take lead but an Abdullah close range header on a Mamunul corner narrowly missed the target.

The Chittagong Abahani were just as impassive while Rahmatganj ran riot in what little time remained, as the Ctg outfit were in possession in the most of the time of the 90 minutes time.

After keeping the Old Dhaka outfit and the giants killers Rahmatganj under immense pressure took the lead on 38th minute when Shakhawat Rony converted a penalty (1-0).

About the penalty, Rahmatganj players strongly protested against the decision and coach Kamal Babu entered into the ground and joined with the players to go charge the referee when his body language looked odd but referee only showed him a yellow card.

In the second half players of both sides looked a bit tensed and were committing fouls very often, though they were doing well to stay in the contest as long as they did but they always lacked cohesion could  not play organised game.

Chittagong giants were pumping long balls towards to open spaces, though their outstanding performer Jahid Hossain was not in the lineup, Zafar Iqbal, Shakhawat Rony and Sohel Rana scythed through the Rahmatganj fragile backline in the last few minutes.

But Rahmatganj had the golden opportunity to level the margin to make a strong bounce back but Elias wasted the chance on 73rd minute when his penalty shot was brilliantly saved by Abahani goalkeeper Ashraf Rana with his right hands dive.
