Young Tigers School Cricket begins today

Sports Reporter

The district round of the Prime Bank Young Tigers National School Cricket Tournament, the biggest cricket competition of the domestic circuit for the 2018 season, will get underway at different venues across the country today.

The tournament, splitting into three phases including District round, Divisional round and National championship round, will be held. This year a total of over 11,000 budding cricketers from 554 schools will take part in the 915-match district round.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) age cricket committee chairman Tanjil Chowdhury disclosed all at a press conference at the Media Block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

The highest number of 130 schools will participate from Dhaka Division. A total of 92 schools are taking part from Chittagong Division. Khulna Division is closely following Chittagong as 84 schools will participate from the division. An equal number of 68 schools is taking part from Rajshahi and Rangpur Division.

Tanjil was accompanied with Prime Bank Limited (PBL) managing director and CEO Rahel Ahmed, its senior executive vice president and company secretary Mohammad Ehsan Habib along with BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, among others, on the occasion.

This time the PBL is providing a staggering amount of Taka one crore and fifteen lakh to bear the expenditure and run the tournament smoothly.

“If we want to see Bangladesh in much better position in future, then we have to develop cricket which has been started from the school cricket. We needed to give them some coaching and guideline so that we could be groomed as a proper cricketer,” said Tanjil Chowdhury.

“We have brought a carnival like competition in the School Cricket so that they could make their habituation with cricket beside enjoyment,” Chowdhury told media at the time of his speech.

Along with that, this BCB director said that they needed to get a long-term partnership to smoothly run the competition in such level of cricket what Prime Bank Limited has been providing for the last few years.

Praising their partnership between the BCB and Prime Bank Limited, Chowdhury said that 14 cricketers stepped into Bangladesh U-15 and another 15 cricketers broke into Bangladesh U-17 from the 2016-2017 season of the Prime Bank School Cricket.

When asked about the complexity of age verification and other some problems, the BCB CEO said “Even though it’s really tough to verify the age of so many players within the short span of time, we verify their age on the basis of their documents, which was sent from their respective school authorities.”
