‘Graft charges’ against HC judges, SC officials

Law minister requests CJ to initiate probe

STAFF REPORTER

Law minister Anisul Huq has requested Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain to initiate an investigation into allegations of irregularities against some High Court (HC) judges and Supreme Court (SC) officials made by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam. The minister made the request to the newly appointed Chief Justice after meeting him at his SC office yesterday (Tuesday). According to sources, the Chief Justice assured the minister that the attorney general’s allegations would be investigated.

After the meeting, Huq told reporters that it was a courtesy meeting with the Chief Justice. He had met all previous chief justices soon after their appointment.

In response to a query, the law minister said the process to appoint some judges of the SC  is on. He, however, did not elaborate on this. To another query, Huq said the law ministry is working as a bridge among the three state organs --- judiciary, executive and the legislature ---- to maintain good relations among them. "I will try my level best to maintain good relations among the three state organs," he noted. The minister said questions arose after former chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha made a controversial statement during his tenure. "But as I respect the judiciary, I did not make any controversial statement at that time," he added.

“I met Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and sought his directives. I also assured him of assistance in conducting smooth functioning of the judiciary. After getting directives from the Chief Justice, we will assist him as desired,” the law minister said.

Anisul Huq said many people agree with the attorney general’s allegations of irregularities in the judicial and administrative functions of the Supreme Court. “I requested the Chief Justice to conduct an investigation into the allegations made by the attorney general. These allegations should be investigated,” he added.

On Sunday, attorney general Mahbubey Alam, citing irregularities in the judicial and administrative functions of the SC's High Court Division, had said the “judiciary has seen degradation” in the last few years and that the image of the HC has changed.

The image of the whole judiciary is being tarnished by some HC judges' failure to run their courts properly, he had alleged. The chief law officer of the state had also said that a large number of court officials and employees were "involved in corruption".

“If the situation continues, the judiciary will break down and it will be difficult for those who are honest to remain honest," the chief law officer of the state had added.

He was speaking at the felicitation of the newly appointed Chief Justice, Syed Mahmud Hossain, at court number-1 of the Appellate Division. The authorities are conducting investigations against at least 24 court officials for various corruption charges, according to SC sources.
