Several villages of Mirzaganj upazila in Patuakhali district have been going under tidal water every day ever since about 200 feet of the Paira river embankment developed a breach.

The affected areas include Santoshpur, Arzidurgapur, and central, eastern, and northern Rampur in Madhabkhali union of the upazila. The Rampur launch ghat is also part of the affected area.

Madrasa students of Bhutiarhat said there is a bamboo bridge and a makeshift bridge fashioned out of a betel nut tree. But both are currently useless due to the lack of embankment and the Paira river erosion. The students do not want to go to the madrasa. They fear for their lives.

Embankments were built along the Paira river more than once in Rampur. But every time, they were destroyed by the river.

Thanks to the erosion, East Rampur Government Primary School and Sundra High School have already been abandoned. Locals are living in panic. The entire embankment may come crashing down at any time.

A kilometre of the embankment was already missing near Sundra High School. As a result, four to five villages get flooded during high tide. People who have lost their homes to the Paira have taken shelter on the school’s verandah, behind it, and on higher ground.

Already, two educational institutes have been removed elsewhere. Rampur Siddiquia Fazil Madrasa will be destroyed in a few days. It has been shifted thrice until now. If the Paira River erosion is not checked, much of Madhabkhali union of Mirzaganj will have to be shifted.

Mirzaganj upazila nirbahi officer Shah Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said that five out of six Mirzaganj unions are affected by erosion.

“The Patuakhali deputy commissioner has been informed about this. We will talk to the Water Development Board and senior authorities to take steps to prevent a complete destruction of the embankment,” he said.

A Water Development Board official in Patuakhali, Md Hasanuzzaman, said a committee has already been formed to prevent river erosion. It is preparing a technical report. This may prevent complete destruction of the embankment.
