Another rape at Banani after birthday bash

Staff Reporter

A woman was allegedly raped at a Banani guest house on Saturday. The woman, 18, was allegedly gangraped after attending a birthday party. A similar incident had occurred at Banani nine months ago. The victim filed a case against two alleged rapists with Banani police station on Sunday night. The police arrested Rajiv Ahmed and his friend Rubel Hossain Joy in this connection, said sub-inspector Kalim of the police station.

Dhaka metropolitan judge Ahsan Habib yesterday (Monday) fixed February 7 for hearing on two separate petitions filed by the police seeking a five-day remand for the accused.

Earlier, police produced the accused and sought the remand, saying they should be interrogated for finding out what had really happened. But the court sent them to jail and fixed the date for hearing on the remand prayer.

The case statement said the woman, a resident of Rupnagar area of Mirpur, got acquainted with Rajib through cellphone a few days back. Later, Rajib invited her to his birthday party at the Star Guest House at Banani on Saturday night. After reaching the guest house around 8:30pm, she found that Rajib and his friend Joy were present there. The accused confined her and raped her several times, according to the case statement.

The woman managed to flee from the spot. The police sent the victim to the "one-stop crisis center" of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for medical test.

The test report has not yet been received, said SI Kalim.

On May 6, 2017, a university student had filed a case with Banani police station, accusing five persons of raping her. Of the accused, Shafat Ahmed, 26 and Nayem Ashraf, 30 were sued for raping two female students of a private university, while Sadman Sakif, 24, Shafat’s driver Billal, 26, and his bodyguard Rahmat were sued for helping them commit the crime.

According to the case statement, the plaintiff, along with her friend, went to a residential hotel at Banani to attend the birthday party of Shafat on 28 March.

The two prime accused, Shafat and Nayem, confined them to two rooms of the hotel at gunpoint after the rooftop birthday party was over at midnight.

Shafat is the son of Dildar Hossain Selim, one of the owners of Apan Jewellers. Months after this, on July 4, 2017, a woman was allegedly raped after responding to a birthday party invitation at Banani. The victim filed a case with Banani police station, claiming that a businessman's son allegedly raped and later threw her on the road.
