JU first year classes begin today

SAVAR: The classes for the 1st year honors courses under the academic session 2017-18 of Jahangirnagar Univesity (JU) will begin today. "Due to the existing accommodation crisis at dorms, the university authority will not be able to allot seats among the newly admitted students  right now," said Deputy Registrar (education-1) Abu Hasan   When the seat will be vacant, associated hall provosts will take initiative to accommodate students in vacant seats, he added.

Moreover, the university authorities will launch Dhaka to JU special bus  services for the first year students so that they can attend regular classes  without staying at dorms, he added.  Meanwhile, the university authority has taken initiative to drive out the invalid students from dormitories.  A notice signed by JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique has already been issued for the invalid students to leave dormitories as soon as possible. This year, a total of 1,986 students have been enrolled in different departments and institutes of the university.

Freshers’ reception held at CU

CHITTAGONG: Social Science Faculty of the Chittagong University (CU) accorded a reception to the fresher’s under the academic session 2017-18 at Social Science Faculty Auditorium yesterday. CU Vice Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury inaugurated the reception programme while chairman of the university grants commission (UGC) Prof Abdul Mannan was the chief guest. In the programme, CU Social Science faculty Dean Prof Farid Uddin presided over the programme where Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Shirin Akhter was the special guest, provost of AF Rahman hall D Ganes Chandra Ray, CU proctor Md Ali Asgor Chowdhury and Chairman of Political science Prof Md Yeahia Akhter were present with among others. BNCC members and senior students of the faculty of CU received the freshers with flowers. A cultural programme followed the reception.

Architecture festival of MIST held in city

The two-day architecture festival of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) ended at Mirpur Cantonment in the capital yesterday. Department of Architecture of MIST organised the event, said a press  release. Major General Md Abul Khair, commandant of MIST, inaugurated the festival on Saturday as the chief guest with the presence of Brigadier General KM Salzar Hossain, head of department of architecture.  The festival featured seminar, students' work exhibition and charrette design.  Eminent architects, educationists and professionals attended the seminar  and shared their presentations and experiences on the future trend of architecture.  A total of 200 students from 37 institutions of architecture across the  country participated in the design charrette.

Spring festival held at ULAB

A celebration gala for 2018 Chinese New Year, Spring Festival 2018 was held on ULAB’s permanent campus at Mohammadpur in the capital yesterday, says a press release. The programme was jointly organised by ULAB and the Confucious Institute of the University of Dhaka.  UNESCO Dhaka Office and Confucius Institute at North South University were co-organisors.  The programme was sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka. Sun Yan, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka was the chief guest. Head and Representative of UNESCO Dhaka Office, Madam B Kaldun, was the special guest. Dr Kazi Anis Ahmed, vice president of ULAB Board of Trustees, delivered the welcome speech. ULAB’s Vice Chancellor Prof HM Jahirul Haque, Prof Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to ULAB’s Board of Trustees, Xi Jian Gong, director of Jiangzhon Cultural Bureau, China and Abu Hena Rasel, director of Career Services at ULAB were other dignitaries present at the event.  The festival included a lot of exciting activities such as the lion and dragon dances, Tai chi, paper-cutting etc. Students, faculty members, administrative officials, and alumni enjoyed the day long festival.
