The first death anniversary of eminent politician, veteran parliamentarian and former member of Awami League (AL) Advisory Council Suranjit Sengupta will be observed today, reports BSS. AL and different socio-cultural organisations in Dhaka and Sunamganj have taken various programmes marking the day. As part of the programmes, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote will light candles in front of Shikha Chirantan at Suhrawardy Udyan in the evening. Besides, Derai upazila Awami League in Sunamganj will hold a mourning rally at 11am. Later, a memorial meeting will be held at 2 pm after placing wreaths at Derai Moha Shoshan Ghat (crematorium center). Suranjit Sengupta, one of the country's political doyens, died on February 5 last year at the age of 72.
He was the Awami League lawmaker from Sunamganj-2 constituency and a member of the party's advisory council. Suranjit was born on May 5, 1945, in Anawarpur area of Sunajmganj. Suranjit was involved in politics from his student life. In 1970, he was the member of the provincial council. He was elected as members of the parliament in the second, the third, the fifth, the seventh, the eighth, the ninth and the 10th Jatiya Sangsad.
