UN’s hollow rhetoric over Rohingya crisis

UN’s hollow rhetoric
over Rohingya crisis

Six months into the Rohingya crisis, we are faced with some unpalatable facts that paint a very dismal picture of the United Nations, supposed to be the world’s humanitarian body, ready to intervene where helpless people are being annihilated.  As satellite pictures of mass graves come to light, the macabre dimension of the Rohingya persecution, initially denied and then suppressed under the guise of militant purging by Myanmar, becomes evident.

Yet, we see with disbelief that the so called civilised world’s response to the plight of the Rohingya is still layered with ambiguous rhetoric, failing to directly point at Myanmar and its puppet civilian regime for being complicit in genocide.  The UN has not been able to obtain permission to enter the ravaged Rakhine State to carry out a thorough assessment of the socio-political scenario – a crucial step to ensure that displaced Rohingya people are not going back to face more atrocities.

There has been plenty of cloak and dagger as to what really happened in Rakhine. Still today, Myanmar has not directly admitted to resorting to using excessive force in what it has consistently termed the purging of Rohingya militants.  For Bangladesh, the responsibility is massive since the exodus triggered by the August 25 crackdown has resulted in the entry of six lakh Rohingyas, adding to the already existing 4 lakh people in various camps.  While the UN plus other first world nations like the UK, USA and members of the European Union are providing support for the Rohingyas living in the camps, no country is directly confronting Myanmar with allegations of ethnic cleansing, leading the military junta in Burma to appear blatantly nonchalant.

The greatest failure is from the UN which has not managed any noteworthy move into Myanmar, raising serious questions as to whose interest this body is serving.  The UN’s impotence becomes even more glaring when we see that a Security Council visit to Rakhine was simply rejected by Myanmar.

It’s common knowledge that UN is run by leading powerful nations of the world, serving mostly interests of nations providing funds for running this body. So, it’s safe to say that UN’s inability to play the role of an effective humanitarian mediator is failure of the donor states.

USA, UK and other countries are providing medical plus other support to Bangladesh while refraining from even using strong language of admonition against Myanmar. A recently opened country to global business, Myanmar is like a commercial paradise and it seems in the face of lucrative returns, values become futile, and the UN just a vacuous body.
