‘Small man’ stands tall for Bangladesh in crisis

Sports Reporter, Ctg

While he made a wild celebration, something looked unusual, upon reaching the hundred in the first innings, Mominul Haque was as usual muted in celebrating his second century of the Test, which made him the first Bangladesh batsman to score century in both innings.

A diminutive Mominul followed his 176 with 105 in the second innings and also made highest score in a Test match, eclipsing Tamim Iqbal’s 231 (25 and 206) against Pakistan in Khulna, 2015.

When the cricket fraternity believed the wild celebration was a befitting reply to Chandika Hathurusingha’s discrimination on him during his tenure, Mominul chose not to endorse it. After reaching a milestone that no other Bangladesh batsman possessed, Mominul again chose to keep calm on his two type celebration for these two centuries.

But he explained that the second century in the match gave him more pleasure considering the match scenario as it came under pressure. So the obvious question was as to why he celebrated it such muted fashion. Mominul again remained tightlipped.

“It was nothing of that sort. Players are unable to think in this way, target something or someone,” said Mominul, replying to a query of whether those back-to-back centuries was a reply to someone else.

“I don’t have an answer for your question. It is not something that I have thought of,” he again said of his celebration for the first century.

“I would keep the second one ahead, because it helped save the match.”

Even though he did not reveal the reason of the celebration, he disclosed the team’s plan on fifth day when they were fighting for survival.

“We have been in this situation before. You have to be mentally strong and believe in yourself. I think that has come from everyone in the team including the management and even those guys who help us out. Riyad bhai told me the same thing, that we shouldn’t have any doubt that we can’t save this game,” he said.

“Liton and I took it session by session, hour by hour. We didn’t consider batting the whole day, which would have been tough to plan.”

“I thought it would turn a bit more. I didn’t want to be surprised with the turn, which is why I kept that in mind.”

He has now six centuries in only 26 Tests, from which five centuries came at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. Is there any love affair with the stadium or any special reason?

“I don’t think there’s any special reason. I haven’t scored here in the last two or three Tests, so I don’t really come here thinking I will get a score. I think it is Allah’s grace that I get run here,” he said.
