PIO arrested on graft charge

LAXMIPUR: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested the project implementation officer (PIO) of Raipur upazila from Natunbazar area of the upazila on Saturday on graft charge, reports UNB.

Assistant director of ACC Rangamati coordinated district office with the help of police arrested Delwar Hossain, son of Nawab Ali hailing from Burichang upazila of Comilla, in the afternoon, said officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station AKM Azizur Rahman Miah.

Two cases were filed with Langadu Police Station in Rangamati against Delwar in 2011 and 2012 for misappropriating government rice while he was the PIO of Langadu upazila. According to the case statements, Delwar embezzled 43.32 tonnes of rice allotted for filling the playground of Tekapara Non-govt Primary School and 2,076 kg more meant for the poor fishermen.

Elderly man beaten dead

A man was killed allegedly by his cousin at Kunekandha village in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Hannan Matubbar, 60, of the village.

Police sources said Hannan locked into an altercation with his cousin Awal Matubbar over a children’s game. At one stage of their altercation Awal hit Hannan with a stick in his head, leaving him dead on the spot.

Being informed police recovered the body and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

A case was filed in this connection.

One arrested with 20 gold bars

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh arrested a suspected gold smuggler along with 20 pieces of gold bars worth about TK one crore from Baro Achra border at Benapole international check post yesterday morning, reports UNB.

The arrestee was identified as Sabuj Miah, 34, son of Shahidul Islam of Sadipur village.

Lt Colonel Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB 49 battalion, said tipped-off, a patrol team of BGP conducted a drive here and arrested the man.

After searching his body, they recovered 20 pieces of gold bars. The seized gold bars were deposited to Benapole customs godown. A case was filed.

5 held with 20,000 yaba tablets

HABIGANJ: Police in a drive arrested five people of a family with 20,000 pieces of yaba tablets from Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Madhabpur upazila yesterday morning, reports BSS.

On a tip-off a team of police intercepted a jeep, coming from Chittagong, on the highway at about 6 am and arrested them with the yaba tablets, said superintendent of police Bidhan Tripura. A case was filed in this connection.

Passport service week begins

A week long passport service week began in the district yesterday morning.

Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Kabir inaugurated the week as the chief guest at a function held at the passport office here.While addressing the function, Kabir said two recruiting agencies will be appointed in the district so that unemployed skilled youth can get job abroad.

He directed the concerned officials to extend passport service to the people with utmost sincerity.

Assistant Director, Regional Passport Office, Jamalpur, Billal Hossain presided over the function.

Regional passport office arranged various programme to observe the week.
