Taijul admits Bangladesh on back foot

Nine wickets were fallen on fourth day, the most for any day in the ongoing first Test, indicating how increasingly it is going to be tougher to bat on. And when Bangladesh are in need of 119 runs to make Sri Lanka just batting for the second time in the match, how on earth they could expect to win the game.

Win is not the thing in Bangladesh’s mind now. Instead they are busy to devise the plan to how they can save the game. If the version of left-arm spinner Taijul Islam is taken into the consideration, there is hardly any chance for Bangladesh to save the game, let alone to win it.

“The wicket deteriorated as the match has progressed. There were some more turn today,” Taijul said.

“There are rough areas that are created as bowlers bowl from different angles. Rough can sometimes make a bad ball into a good one. As a batsman, it will be tough to survive.”

Taijul might not be diplomatic enough to reply the question but undoubtedly Bangladesh are in the worst position right at the moment. The pitch is not unplayable. It’s also not a batting paradise like the first three days with some turn and bounce on the offer. But still if a batsman can apply them properly, there is obviously a chance to avoid a defeat.

Bangladesh’s task however got tougher with the dismissal of Mushfiqur on the last ball of the day. It was a big blow for them, considering Mushfiqur has been the mainstay of Bangladesh’s middle order. And there is no Shakib Al Hasan who was ruled out due to his finger injury.

“I think if Mushfiqur Rahim was around, it would have helped us,” Taijul said. “There is a lot to think, and a lot not to think about. We have to save the game. If our batsmen can survive the fifth day, then we can get something out of it.”

The plan was to score runs off the bad balls just but losing three wickets pushed them on back foot, Taijul revealed.

“Batsmen would like to score runs off the bad balls. It would have been better had we lost one wicket. Three wickets are too many.”

However Taijul dismissed the fact that fielding for three days at a stretch made them tired which made an adverse impact on their batting.

“When you have to field for three days, everyone gets into a tough situation. Still all of our boys have remained strong despite such a long time in the field,” he differed.

The day was worse for Bangladesh and at the same time the day was also worse for Taijul Islam.

He had delivered most overs in a Test innings by a Bangladeshi bowler but also conceded most runs by a Bangladeshi bowler. Taijul said he didn’t want to be part of any record of those two.
