E-passports soon, says minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said the government is set to introduce E-passports soon with ten-year tenure instead of the existing five years. “We are setting up electronic gates and necessary equipments at airports, land and sea ports to introduce the e-passport,” he said while inaugurating ‘Passport Service Week-2018’ at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital.

Department of Immigration and Passport (DIP) organised the week-long programme beginning yesterday, aiming at issuing passports to applicants without any hassle.

Also present, Director General of DIP Major General Md Masud Rezwan said they have issued about two crore machine readable passports (MRPs) till date and earned around Tk 11,000 crore in revenue.

“We are planning to give posting to a number of officials and employees to different offices of Bangladesh missions abroad to provide passport services to the expatriate Bangladeshis,” he said.

On the occasion, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages wishing success for the week-long programme.
