Bangladesh-SL Test series tit-bit

Herath’s 500th international wicket

Sports Reporter

Rangana Herath is tipped to be the killer for Bangladesh. But the hosts dealt with him so superbly that he went wicket-less on the first day, returning figures of 20-1-100-0. However the batsman couldn’t contain him on second day and he struck in just third over of the day, having dismissed Mominul Haque for 176, denying him the double century. Then he took out Mosaddek Hossain Saikat for 8, making him his 500th international wicket. He finished the innings with another wicket of Taijul Islam to claim three for 150 finally, which meant his tally in international cricket now stands 501—409 in Test, 74 in ODI and 18 in T20. Herath however had already retired from the ODI and T20 cricket.

Bangladesh’s highest score at ZACS
In a ground, where Bangladesh have success in abundance, they have just crossed 500 runs mark in Test match three times. And the latest is 513 against Sri Lanka, which now is their highest total in this ground. Earlier they made 504 and 501 against Zimbabwe and New Zealand respectively. The 513 is now the sixth highest total in this ground. However Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium’s highest score is occupied by England who declared the innings on 599 for six against Bangladesh in 2010.

A record but not a century
Mahmudullah Riyad was stranded on 83 in his first innings as a captain. If the first innings is concerned, he got the highest score on debut for any captain of Bangladesh. Shakib had 96 not out against West Indies on his captaincy debut but the knock came in the second innings. Shakib made 16 in the first innings of that match. However it was the first time since 2010, Riyad came so close to make century but lack of any partnership he couldn’t grab his second Test century. Only once when he got past 80 plus mark, he got a century and that remains as the only century of his career. He however go past 2000 runs mark as only seventh Bangladeshi batsman when he was on 69. It was his 36th Test. Earlier on the first day, Mominul Haque became the sixth batsman and quickest to reach 2000 runs mark on his 26th Test.

Mehidi’s anger
On a day when making runs was astonishingly easier, the bowlers found them in a state of sheer humiliation. Apart from the mistake of the batsman, taking wicket was impossible. Amid this, Mehidi Hassan Miraj produced a delivery that should get Kusal Mendis. He sent down a length ball just outside off which came on dead straight with the arm and took the outside edge, when Mendis played for the turn and offered a catch at first slip. But Kayes, stationed there perhaps, couldn’t believe a catch could come at this moment. His delayed reaction meant, the ball raced to the boundary rope to gift the batsman a four. Mehidi looked hopeless, and gave a stern look to Kayes who gestured an apology type look in return.

Mahmudullah’s review woe
Bangladesh lost their two reviews on the day and won’t get anyone until they complete 80 overs of the Sri Lanka’s innings. Sri Lanka so far played 48 overs, Bangladesh couldn’t challenge umpire’s decision for more 32 overs. Bangladesh took two reviews against Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva and twice the bowler was left arm spinner Tajul Islam. First time, the review was for leg-before when de Silva advanced down the track by three meters. Second time, they reviewed the decision of caught behind against Mendis and it also went against them. Mendis finally remained not out on 83. It was woe for Mahmudullah Riyad but bowler Taijul Islam seemed way too persistent to force the captain when the bowler himself should be honest.
