Tamim aims a pretty big total

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal believed his side gained an upper-hand over Sri Lanka by scoring a record runs on the day one of the first Test even though he refused to rate it as a complete performance.

The attacking opener instead thought that had they not lost two wickets in succession toward the end of the day’s play, it could have been a bigger day for them as the 374 for two would look better than 374 for four.

“It would have been a complete performance if the second wicket stand finished the day,” Tamim said. “We were a little anxious to avoid the collapse which we often have after a big partnership. It was unfortunate for Liton to get out just after Mushfiq got out. I still believe it was a fantastic day for us. We were very positive and attacking from ball one. It was nice to see.”

Tamim Iqbal gave the side a solid start after Mahmudullah on his first assignment as captain rightly called the toss. He and Imrul Kayes shared 72-run in just 16 overs, before he himself was dismissed on 52 and Kayes followed him, scoring 40 on the stroke of the lunch, leaving the side 120 for two.

Mushfiqur Rahim joined Mominul and together they kept Sri Lanka frustrated in the whole second session before the visitors came back strongly with two wickets toward the end of the day’s play, thanks to Surgana Lakmal. However Mahmudullah Riyad and Mominul saw off the day without further trouble.

“My plan to put them under pressure clicked. I was trying to attack their main bowlers from ball one which put them in a situation where we wanted them. They have two world-class spinners but at one point they didn’t know where to bowl. We knew their past record, so to successfully attack them makes us happy,” Tamim said.

“I hope the wicket becomes difficult from tomorrow when they come to bat. Our responsibility would be to capitalise on this position and score as much as possible. A big score is always pressure regardless of the pitch.”

Tamim didn’t reveal the score that wanted to do but emphasised on to start well in the morning session today.

“I won’t put up a number, but we are in a position from where we can score more runs. We don’t get this position every day. We have six wickets in hand, and we have a good run-rate. We need to make sure we start well tomorrow. If we can build more partnerships, we can score pretty big.”
