Two ‘criminals’ killed in 
‘gunfight’ with RAB, police

Two alleged criminals were killed in ‘gunfights’ between gangs and law enforces in Feni and Netrakona yesterday. In Feni, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a gunfight with Rapid action Battalion (RAB) -7 at Dharmapur village under Sadar upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Anower Hossain alias Raju, 25. He was accused in 10 cases including drug peddling, robbery, arms, rape and abductions, according the law enforcers.

Sources said, based on secret information that a group of drug peddlers were preparing to smuggle drugs through Dharmapur area on the outskirts of Feni town, a RAB team raided the area.

Commander of RAB 7 Squadron Leader Safayet Jamil Fahim told The Independent that a RAB team went to the area around 4:30am to thwart the drug smuggling attempt. Sensing presence of RAB members, drug peddlers opened fired on law enforcers, forcing RAB to return fire. Anower Hossain was injured during the gunfight. RAB took him to Feni sadar hospital where he was pronounced dead.

 The elite force seized two foreign made pistols, two one-shooter guns, one pistol, seven rounds of bullets and five cartridges from the spot.

UNB adds: In Netrakona, an alleged robber was killed during a gunfight with law enforcers in Mohanganj early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Lutfar Rahman alias Ripul, 40, son of late Abdul Motaleb Mia of Chanpur village of Mohanganj upazila.

Mohanganj Police Station OC Ansari Jinnat Ali said Ripul was arrested on Sunday afternoon and they launched a drive at night with Ripul at Noapara to recover illegal arms.

During the drive, Ripul's accomplices fired gunshots on police while police also retaliated, triggering the gunfight, he said.

Ripul sustained bullet wound during the exchange of fire and was rushed to Mohanganj Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

The body was sent to Netrokona General Hospital for autopsy. Three cops were also injured during the gunfight, said police.
