power supply to Dhaka

Tk 20,500cr project on the cards

JAGARAN CHAKMA

A Tk. 20,501.51 cr power project is being planned to ensure quality electric supply and strengthen power transmission and distribution in Dhaka city. The Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) will implement the project in Dhaka and Narayanganj city areas. The project titled “Expansion and strengthening of power distribution of DPDC under its jurisdiction” is going to be placed before today's Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting for approval. According to the project summary, the initiative is being taken against the backdrop of frequent power cuts every day, particularly in summer, because of inadequate and outdated transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Moreover, overhead cables of the power transmission and distribution system of the company often cause trouble in the densely populated capital. The project will be implemented by December 2021. The project evaluation committee (PEC) of the Planning Commission recommended that the detailed project plan (DPP) should be placed before the ECNEC meeting for approval.

The Chinese EXIM Bank will provide USD 1.65 billion (Tk. 13,844.28 crore), more than 70 per cent of the project cost, as supplier’s credit. The government will provide Tk 5536.96 crore, while the rest of Tk. 1120.26 crore will come from the DPDC. The Chinese firm Tebian Electric Apparatus Co Ltd will execute the project. The Chinese contractor will be paid USD 1.65 billion for the job. Some 14 grid sub-stations and 60 distribution sub-stations will be installed under the project. Every sub-station will have two transformers with space for further expansion, according to the project proposal.

Overhead power transmission and distribution networks in Dhanmondi and Hatirjheel areas will be replaced by underground networks. Besides, power transmission and distribution networks will be shifted underground in other areas of Dhaka city. In addition, at least 4.6 lakh new connections will be provided under the project.

Meanwhile, the company has also finalised the specifications and the prices of materials to be supplied by the Chinese contractor.
