Holders Abahani Limited put another step ahead to retain the title with crossing a stiff hurdle after defeating Brothers Union by 2-0 in the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League football yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Nasiruddin Chowdhury and Rubel Meah struck one goal each in each half when the former broke the deadlock on 32nd minute and the latter doubled the advantage on 60th.

After winning the match Abahani stretched their lead to remain on top with 49 points and two matches in hands.

In fact for all the three title contenders turned into must win position to remain firmly in the race and Abahani successfully crossed the first hurdle.

However, the match was started with Abahani producing a half chance with Twuam Frank’s sloppy pass closely to outside the box turned into huge trouble for Brothers when Sohel Rana got the ball possession and delivered inside danger area for Jiban but goalkeeper sharply gripped the ball.

Avoiding the initial pressure Brothers’ comeback was hugely impressive in terms of performance and character of quick attacking move and was about to take lead on 21st minute but was unlucky not to have a goal. This time Salahuddin superbly snatched a ball from Waly Faysal and crossed it in the penalty area but Joseph’s good header hit defender Tutul Hossain Badshah when Abahani goalkeeper Shahedul Alam Sohel left the post open.

But it was also an indication for Abahani to deliver a rampant response in style to hold their offensive advantage and took the coveted lead just after the half an hour mark.

Brother Keeper Sujon Chowdhury missed the flight to grip an Emon Babu corner, as the ball went to unmarked Nasiruddin’s way, who comfortably pushed the ball into near post on 32nd minute (1-0).

Actually, the match was not excited, as it was predicted, as the win for Abahani was too easy, when Brothers trying to fight evenly could not continue their tempo and were losing the possession very often due to wrong passes.

However, Abahani having their lead reflected the confidence running through with delightful passing football with good technique destroying the pressure overpowered Brothers challenges with Rubel Meah fired a right-foot placing into top corner of the net over the goalkeeper (2-0).

It was a wonderful possession when Abahani goalkeeper lofted an offside kick from few meters from the box which found Jibon header in front of the Brothers box and Rubel superbly control the ball with anther header before to send into the net over the keeper on 60th minute.

Brothers disorganised forwards’ performance disheartened all as the impressive moves were halted by Abahani defenders before to make any danger.
