Continued peace,
political stability main challenges

Awami League wants to ensure the continuation of peace, ongoing development projects, and political stability in 2018, AL presidium member advocate Yousuf Hossain Humayan said. As the time of holding the 11th parliamentary elections draws near with the possibility of them being held this year, the ruling AL is determined to prevent any anarchic situation and ensure political stability in the country. Talking to this correspondent, the AL senior leader said: “Our main concern this year is to keep political stability intact.” “If our arch rival, the BNP-Jamaat nexus, wants to create anarchy in the country again, as they did in 2015, we will resist them politically along with the country’s people,” he added.

“Our, another major task will be to continue the ongoing development activities to take the country forward,” he emphasised. About an inclusive election, the AL senior leader said the government would try its best to hold the next polls with the participation of all political parties so that no unelected element was able to grab power.

Meanwhile, party insiders said wining in the 11th national election in 2018 and remaining in power for the third consecutive term was the AL’s main goal.

To ensure victory in next elections, the AL plans to launch a massive campaign from January as part of its preparations for the next general elections, which, according to sources, might be held in December 2018.

According to party insiders, AL president Sheikh Hasina has already directed the party’s central leaders to frequently visit different organisational districts to highlight the government’s success stories.

Hasina, who is also the Prime Minister, has asked AL general secretary Obaidul Quader to distribute divisional responsibilities by forming eight teams with the central leaders, including two presidium members for each team.

Talking to this correspondent, AL presidium member Muhammad Faruk Khan said Hasina had directed them to fan out across the country to project the government’s development activities before the people.

He also said the main objectives of the massive drive were to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level by minimising intra-party feuds and to mobilise public support in favour of the party as part of the campaign for the next general election.

“Another objective of our drive is to collect the latest information at the grassroots level and keep our party chief informed about the current condition of our party,” he added.

Awami League joint general secretary Abdur Rahman said: “Awami League’s main priority is to bring the party to power for the third consecutive term.” He said that the Awami League central committee members had already started visiting several districts to project before the people the development work undertaken by the Sheikh Hasina government.
