Some medicine shops observe strike in Ctg

Patients in Chittagong yesterday surfed as pharmacies in Baddarhat area went on strike protesting an action by a mobile court that had fined some drugstores Tk 17 lakh on Sunday. A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) with the help of drug administration fined the errant drugstores for selling date expired medicines and unauthorised medicines.   

About 2,500 retail and wholesale drugstores in the area remained shut for almost 24 hours, keeping patients hostage. However, around 800 shops in Chittagong Medical College Hospital and surrounding areas did not join the wildcat strike. Ashish Archarjee, general secretary of Bangladesh Chemist and Druggist Somity Chittagong, said Rapid Action Battalion and Drug Administration conducted mobile court at Haque Market of Baddarhat area inthe city on Sunday and had fined Tk 17 lakh to some drugstores.

The leaders of the Samity sat on an emergency meeting as per the decision and have called for the strike for the 24 hours from Monday morning.

Meanwhile, due to sudden announcement of closure of pharmacies in the city, the common people had to face immense sufferings.

Many people returned home without medicines at the largest wholesale market Hazari Lane in the city due to sudden strike.
