Persons with disabilities need care

Persons with disabilities
need care

About 10 percent of the total population of Bangladesh are victims of physical and mental disability somehow or other. Disability is not a curse and the persons with disabilities are not burden on their families, society or the state if they are groomed up as productive force. International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed in the country as elsewhere in the globe recently, aiming at promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The theme of the day was ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all’.

The development of the country cannot be expected ignoring the persons  suffering from disability. The disabled people will have to be brought under the mainstream population. Boys or girls with disabilities taking part in examinations make newspaper headlines at times. Those who have no hands are seen writing with the help of legs. Even some are seen writing answer scripts putting pens within their mouths. This amply shows that there is no dearth of efforts on the part of the disabled people to overcome their disabilities.

Through proper education and rigorous training the people with disabilities can be made skilled productive force. They can earn for themselves, for their families and can also contribute to the development of the country. They can prove that they are no more dependent on others. In this way, they can live with dignity and not as objects of pity.  In this age of globalization, Information Technology can do a lot for the people with disabilities. Armed with technological expertise, the disabled ones can be self-reliant, support their families and even can contribute to employment generation for others.

The people with disabilities need proper infrastructural support. Government can provide it, NGOs of the country can also come forward in the aid of the disabled ones. The physically and mentally challenged people should get some special privilege in public and private transports. They should also be treated with humility at their places of work. A disabled person can engage him/her in income-generating activities even sitting on a wheel-chair. If his/her brain works properly, he/she can conquer the disability by dint of sheer will power. The families of the persons with disabilities must be conscious in this regard. Proper medical care, financial, familial, social and psychological support can rejuvenate the dampening spirit of a disabled person.

No VC in 17 universities The finding is rather shocking – seventeen private run universities do not have VCs. There is more: fifty-six are without pro-VC’s and forty have vacant posts for treasurers. The picture is…
