Army to reinforce skill to conduct air operations

The Bangladesh Army is planning to strengthen its skill to conduct air operations by forming an "Army Aviation Directorate" as part of implementation of the Forces’ Goal 2030, according to government sources. To form the proposed aviation directorate, 44 posts in different categories, including a post of director with the rank of colonel and three posts of general staff officer with the rank of Lt Col, would be created soon, the sources said.

The government is also going to form an "Aviation Group" by reorganising the existing ‘Army Aviation’ by creating 388 posts. At the same time, an "Army Aviation Maintenance Workshop" will be built by reorganising the existing "Army Aviation Engineering Workshop". At least 297 posts in different categories would be created for the proposed Army Aviation Maintenance Workshop, the sources added.

A proposal, prepared by the defence ministry to form the three separate aviation organisations, was sent to the Cabinet Division for submission at the meeting of the Secretary Committee on Administration Improvement Affairs to be held today.

According to the proposal, a total of 729 posts (44 posts for the proposed Army Aviation Directorate, 388 for Aviation Group and 297 posts for Army Aviation Maintenance Workshop) will be created in five phases in the next five years. “The public administration ministry and the finance ministry have already approved the creation of the posts to form the three organisations of the Bangladesh Army,” it noted.

The existing Army Aviation Group was set up on January 1, 1978 as Army Aviation Flight. It was established to carry out military air operations. Male and female pilots work under Army aviation to conduct such operations. A number of military personnel are trained by the Army Aviation School to conduct military operations in the sky. The Army Aviation Wing has become a reliable outfit of the Bangladesh Army in carrying out various operational missions like CASEVAC, MEDEVAC, paradropping,

load dropping, reconnaissance, VIP and troops carrying, and mail run, among others.

The regiment commander of the Fixed Wing Regiment of the ad hoc Army Aviation Group told The Independent that they have trained over 70 officers, including four naval officers, from the Aviation Wing. “We'd like to provide advanced training to Army officers to enable them to fly bigger aircraft in future,” he said.
